North Shore Airport is a small regional airport located 30KM North of Auckland CBD, mainly involved with flight training. Just under an hour's drive from Auckland downtown, it lies between the suburbs of Albany and Silverdale on the Postman Rd accessed either by Dairy Flat highway (31) or East Coast Road (25). North Shore Airport is owned by the North Shore Aero Club which was formed in 1963. Since the first flights took place at the current site in the late 1950s, North Shore Airport is a popular pilot training institution of the country. It provides training for recreational and commercial qualifications. North Shore Helicopter Training located next door, provides helicopter pilot training. This small airport with limited passenger facilities offers scheduled services to Great Barrier Island provided by Barrier Air, chartered scenic flights and flying lessons. Flight time from North Shore to Great Barrier Island is approximately 20 to 25 minutes. The airport has two runways. A sealed 03/21 vector and a gravel 09/27, both runways have grass either side also available for landing. The airport is also home to the Northland Emergency Services Trust (NEST) rescue helicopter. This helicopter operates outside the normal hours of operation for rescue purposes.
