Mum and I arranged for my late father to stay at Lady Allum for a week long respite just last month, so that mum could have a quick break from caregiving duties (he suffered from Multiple System Atrophy, meaning he was bedbound, unable to communicate and required constant care). After going in to visit him the next day and seeing dad in the state he was in, we decided to discharge him and bring him back home with us immediately. It feels downright disingenuous to claim that this facility provides hospital level care, when it was evident the level of care was neglectful at best. He'd been given nothing to drink and left dehydrated, with not even a cup of water by his bedside. The airbed mattress we requested to minimize his bedsores at check in hadn't even been put on the bed and left carelessly on the floor. We clearly specified that he needed soft food in the paperwork and saw that he was given a piece of hard toast alongside pureed slop. He was also wearing same nappies from the day earlier- meaning none of the paid caregivers bothered to change him, even when we told them that he required regular changing due to bedsores and risk of infection. The room temperature was cold even with the heater turned on and level of hygiene by janitors seemed questionable at best. A cleaner came in while we were visiting, and honestly all she did was do a single spray and a wipe on the bathroom seat before moving on to the next room. On our way out we happened to see a caregiver changing a patient's nappy in his unit- but only because the door was wide open. We were shocked to see how she was manhandling a frail patient who seemed to have a dementia. She literally yanked the man's nappies right from his underneath after propping him up like a ragdoll, for goodness sake!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everyone deserves to be treated with respect and dignity, especially those in weakened states that are unable to speak for themselves. Absolutely, utterly atrocious and disgusting. The impression I got was that this facility neglects helpless patients while they happily charge away by day til the cash cows reach their expiry date. To be fair though, the check in receptionist and the admissions manager Elisha were lovely and sympathetic. It's a shame though that the same could not be said to the caregiving staff. Dad unfortunately passed away this week in peace, surrounded by friends and in very good care.. We however feel that this would happened a lot sooner, had he stayed at Lady Allum any longer- not only that, but neglected, alone, dehydrated and in pain. Def not the way to see a loved one go.

Rest Home staff caring, attentive and professional. Assisted Living excellent too. Kowhai Hospital staff - some inattentive, bossy and disrespectful to the residents. Shame on the few that act like this!
