Manurewa High School

I was a bookish kid with zero interest in sports. In my first year (3 Pro 1, class of '66), the deputy head Skip Brown called me to his office and told me that if I didn't play rugby for the school I would, in his words, "not get on very well around here." I didn't play rugby and I assume that this was the reason I was caned viciously and repeatedly for serious offences like running in the hall, talking in class (many of these!), being in the general vicinity when someone laughed at the headmaster, all the way up to possession of cigarettes. Eventually, seeing no value in a Manurewa High School education, and rather than bend over for yet another pointless and painful beating, I walked out. My parents were sent a letter saying I had been expelled. That is not true I had already walked out! My father and the head were both old soldiers and I was persuaded to go back, but by then my girlfriend was pregnant and I had other responsibilities... That was then. I sincerely hope that MHS is a more enlightened institution now.
