thank you to Howick Firemen for rescueing me from the Somerville-Point View Drive walkway. Got caught in a mudslide which was impassable and the light was fading. Tried to climb up the mudslide/waterfall to the fence at the top but got stuck up the cliff and could go neither up nor down. A cry for help and the firemen turned up and managed to pull me out and get me to the top of the cliff. A big thank you! Cela Martin

Massive thank you to the crew at Howick Fire Station today. They went not only above and beyond today but more importantly where others dare not go. Upon discovering what appeared to be that a nest of baby birds had been cutoff from their parents. The birds I believed to be Tui, later turned out to be Myna birds were clearly all distressed. We had babies screeching right through the night for 2 nights and the parents scratching to reach them. The obstruction appeared to be some small plastic bags, that once removed and the access cleared of debris, the parents were able to again tend to their chics. My first call was to DOC, who could not help other than to advise me to try the SPCA as Tui were protected but not short of numbers (remember, at this point I thought they were Tui). The SPCA informed me that they had their ladders taken off of them by worksafe and that I should try the local Council. I phoned the Council and was told that there was nothing they could do but I should try the Fire Brigade. Now I genuinely thought the Fire Brigade only rescued animals in the movies but no, I was wrong, sure enough they came out with their ladders (the reason I couldn't do this myself, as I didn't have a 20 foot ladder, and the nest was by the roof), investigated, cleared the access and left - true heros in my book and I cannot thank them enough.
