Upper Mangatwhiri Dam, situated in the Auckland's Hunua Ranges is a rolled earth dam with a storage volume of 16 million cu.m (16 billion litres). The groundbreaking started in 1961 and the project was completed in 1965, which at the time was one of the advanced rolled earth dams designed in New Zealand. It was also done in a shorter timeframe for that type of earth dams as total earthworks were completed in 276 days while reaching a maximum of 8,730 cu.m of compaction work for one day. The dam site is in the centre of the Moumoukai Valley with a catchment area of 2,580 ha and reservoir area 136 ha when full. Dam itself is 35m high and 494m long with 1.17 million cu.m of earth rolled in. Improvements to spillway were done in 2007 to meet the new earthquake regulations. There are number of recreational activities available in and around the dam site. Famous for wild rainbow trout fishing but allowed only on the boulders on the face of the dam within the areas indicated by signs. 13km Mangatwhiri loop track is great for about 5 hrs of tramping. A couple of mountain biking trails available too. Horse riding is popular here with a separate horse float park available. Also great for bird watchers too so it is an ideal leisure/activity park.
