Alexander Technique Auckland - Jann McMichael

My initial stimulation for taking Alexander lessons with Jann was my painful shoulders and their restricted movement. I left the first lessons with things to focus and a clearer idea of how I was making my own problems worse. Over the time I've worked with Jann Ive developed a more subtle understanding of my own body and how to develop and maintain it. It took only 2 or 3 lessons to really notice the improvement. My shoulders are now pain free. Ive also had two major disc hernias in my time and have lived with a sore back for years. Now, I sleep better and dont have a constant ache in my lower back. Last year, thanks to Jann, I was able to walk the Heaphy track, with a full pack, and this year I am gearing up to walk the Old Coach Road a 5-day 80km walk. Janns teaching is very perceptive. She seems to see things very clearly and her observations are always insightful. In short, I learn more each lesson. We sometimes go back over things we've done before, but she adds another element, with a more nuanced description of the spine and how I relate to it. As I learn more about my body, I learn more about me.

Jann quietly confronted my thinking that I need to DO something to my body to move or relax it. She explained and demonstrated clearly how the Alexander Technique by learning how to ALLOW the body to regain it's natural position. Previously, I carried so much tension, especially in my face, neck and shoulders. Now I have a tool that works! And means that I won't need to keep going to any Physiotherapist, Osteopath etc. As I continue to follow this technique I am loosing more of that tension and finding a freeness of movement. It's such a relief! Thank you Jann.

Thanks to Alexander Technique lessons with Jann I no longer slump on the couch while watching telly and am more aware of my posture. Having been a migraine sufferer, I get through my days now without headaches. I found it very valuable. I recommend AT, especially with Jann as the teacher.

I've been working with Jann for a couple of years now and always find our sessions useful. Jann is an excellent observer of the human body and clearly communicates what she sees and what she thinks you need to do to improve, in a supportive and practical way. After a lifetime of sitting poorly at desks all day and in rush-hour traffic, I've benefited immensely from working with her.

I really enjoyed working with Jann. She helped me become more aware of how I use my body, and gave me tools and exercises so I could help myself use my body more functionally. Before I started working with her I struggled with neck pain, which now is completely gone. After six sessions with her I can already feel the difference, and the good thing with Alexander technique is that you really can use what you learn and bring it with you in your daily life. Highly recommended!
