Wiri Mountain

Matukutururu (Wiri mountain) is what was left after the larger part of it was quarried and taken away for the construction of Great South Road as a military service line by the English side in the Waikato Land Wars. There is evidence of restorative native planting - possibly the work of Tupuna Maunga Authority but I've not confirmed this. The area has a lot of wild fennel, and Swan plant. Real wilderness vibe. From the high point if you look towards the Manukau Harbour, you can see its sibling maunga; Matukutureia (MacLachlan's Hill) . Then, sweeping right you see mt Mngere, Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill), Maungawhau (mt Eden), Maungarei (Mt Wellington), and finally Rangitoto. While the stature of this Maunga has been degraded, its wairua can still be felt and the poignancy of it's history is palpable.

Matukutruru hill has a lava cave on the top. The cave is closed. It is deep and vast. Half of the hill had been previously mined and converted into the industrial park. You can see Manukau Harbour from the to of the hill. Or pick up some nice giant purple flowers on the way
