I grew to love the spirit in how he fashioned and designed a piece of wood into a living art form. In September this year, I commissioned Michael to make me a Tewhatewha that would become part of my collection. In November, my Whnau uplifted the art piece from Michael in Ngongotaha and brought it over to Sydney with them. Michael did a custom piece for my new whare, the first one for my whanau from my direct lineage to protect us and welcome us, and he was just incredible. He was easy to work with, always contactable, took everything i asked for on, and he even took the time to translate into text the koorero behind the piece when it arrived - and this was all during peak covid aswell as between countries with only technology to keep us in touch (i am based in Sydney). A truly magnificent outcome and I cant wait to work with him for my next piece.

Michael Matchitt carved a beautiful box to complement laying my step mother to rest in such short time, amazing, absolute beautiful work and even complemented both of my step mum's tribes tuhoi and nga puhi.
