This is really a special place. Gov website indicates its free for any kind of vehicle. Suitable for cyclists though about 10km off the main road. Bring a torch and plenty of battery for the night walk and eyes peeled for kiwis. Note: there is a fallen tree about 3/4 of the way in blocking the way main way to the kiwi listening area. Follow minginui road until you see large wooden sign for sanctuary road and follow that to the site. No reception of any kind. 4g at the intersection of hwy 38 and minginui road. Bring your own tp. Nearest supplies are munupara to the west and ruatahuna to the east.

The road out to the campsite is dusty, and rocky. Not recommended for the faint of heart or low riding cars. My friends and I stayed here for the long weekend. We had 5 tents and there were two other canpervans there with room to spare. The picture attached with the picnic table is of an area where no one was tenting, but visitors would come in and park to do the walks. The walk is highly recommended wild horses came to graze on our last day.

One of the most amazing places. A tiny campsite by a stream, in a prehistoric feeling forest, even the insects look and sound primeval. No one around for miles and miles. Probably not a spot for peopke from town that scare easily, as no one else here. Night time walks looking and listening for Kiwi. Longtail bat watching at dusk. A long drop toilet and fresh river water. Bring supplies, nearest shop is 30k away. This place is a real must for nature lovers. If you're brave enough take SH38 from the coast and drive through mountain bush and past NZ's deepest lake. Its a metal road, steep, windy, massive drops, one lane mostly, but if you have ever wondered what the view from a top of a mountain looks like but will never climb one, then take this road.
