Mangamate Hut

Walked in 24/9/22 from River rd carpark. Sign times correct. Hadnt been up the Mangamate stream itself before and despite high water after the week of rain only the first half dozen stream crossings were to be thought about. Hut was clean with 9 bunks and an extra mattress. Firewood was lean so didnt light the fire but gathered wood for an hr for the next people if even needed now that winter is over. Good sized rainbow in the stream, 4 pair of Whio and no end of deer and pig sign. Kiwi heard from hut site through the night.

Great little hut perched high on a ridge. Only 9 bunks so can fill quickly, but there are a few flat places in the long grass to pitch a tent (best not to pitch on the heli pad area). We walked out north through the Mangamate Stream. There had been a bit of rain over night but the stream was still clear. Nonetheless the stream was swift and deep in places. The last few crossings were difficult and technical. The trail is very overgrown, you have to watch confidently for markers. Also lots of stinging nettles and Toitoi (cutty grass), especially on the lower section. Wear your highest gaiters.
