        A short 20 minute return walk to the crater lake. A volcanic blue lake sits in front of red steaming cliffs. A great place to see the ochre (red) which is a sacred colour to the Maori . Tapu can be interpreted as'sacred', or defined as 'spiritual restriction', containing a strong imposition of rules and prohibitions. A person, object or place that is tapu may not be touched or, in some cases, not even approached. The rock face in Maori has volcanic origins, and is callef Maunga Kkaramea, meaning 'mountain of coloured red clay or earth'.
