Make sure that when you use Canterbury youth services you check that the counselor has NZ registration. Our CYS counselor was not registered with any NZ group (the manager did not even know what the qualification of our counselor was when I asked him). This is because if you disagree with the method being used you have no legal rights and no the code of ethics for NZ counselors will no apply. Take care that your counselor has enough experience with the issues your family is dealing with, and that's not just a couple of weeks or months. It is better to have no counselor than one that does not work for your family. Canterbury Youth services chose to work with just my child and wanted no input from the family. When questioned about this I was told by the manager and the counselor together that it was just my opinion. I am of the opinion that if it is a family problem, we had attachment/adoption issues, then the family should be part of the solution. If your child is aged 16 years or older you will find that you have no rights to stop them going to counseling even if you feel it is harming your child. Our counselor made destructive comments about our family . Incidentally although I have tried endlessly I have not been able to talk to my son, who has left us, since July 2013!
