It was also great just chatting with Nick and learning more about New Zealand. Nick has a real genuine interest to let you enjoy your trip in one of his vans (rather than just earning money from you) and that personal touch really made it a great experience for us.
On a side note I would like to mention the vans are really set up and built very nicely with a lot of attention to details. For example, we have stayed in a few cabins on the North Island and none of the windows had bug screens making warm nights lack fresh air from the outside. On the opposite the van was perfectly equipped for that. I had wrongly assumed bug screens would be normal and logical to have everywhere but it was really plus while travelling in the van.

Its pretty straightforward: if (the two of) you are thinking about discovering NZ bij campervan, go Piwiwiwi! Nick (the owner) is a very nice guy with a personal touch, but whats really important is the campervan itself. It looks good (just white without any visible branding), its reliable and it works great in all respects. The solar panel on top makes sure that you are really free (it runs the fridge and you can charge your toothbrush on 220 v as well as all your 12 v gadgets) and the very well thought through layout makes it a small but super practical home away from home. One of the great features that deserves mentioning (all campervans should have them but many dont) are the two windows up in the hat of the van. They provide a safe (too high to climb in from the outside and bug resistant) and oh so important airflow that will cool the van down in an instant when it has been sitting out in the sun somewhere and makes for a great fresh air night sleep. Size-wise this campervan is all you need really and it makes for easy parking anywhere. And prize-wise its a winner! Not only compared to bigger vans, but also compared to the same size or even smaller campervans. You will find no better overall package than with Piwiwiwi. Are there no downsides at all? Well, yes, nobody is perfect, right?
1. Nicks fleet is not enormous so you have to be quick to get your hands on one of his vans. Book early in advance!!
2. If you are taller than say 1,75 meter, you need to get creative by pulling out the toilet from under the bed, putting some cushions on top so your feet have a place to rest as well.
3. The water tank only holds about 27 liters. Thats not a whole lot. So make a habit of topping it up every day, which can be done almost anywhere (fi at a gas station).
4. The engine is rather underpowered (but whos in a hurry) and rather thirsty. One liter of fuel gave us 7 kilometers. So take that into account budget wise.
We have been living in & with this campervan for 60 days and along the way have had the opportunity to talk to many other van-travelers and share information. We can safely conclude: Piwiwiwi is the way to go!

Van was perfect for our needs: in great condition, and while not the most powerful engine it was fine and got us around reliably. This size van is compact but that suited us as easy to park but fully self contained and well laid out with all the basics and some thoughtful extras provided. Also good having minimal restricton where we could take the van as did have a few sections of dirt road.
The aiport pick up and drop off were very handy, as was the option to return the van early evening before our flight so we weren't stuck for transport on our last day.
I highly recommend piwiwiwi campers for anyone looking for a great priced, reliable, well thought out camper from a family-run company with excellent customer service.
