To reach the copland shelter you need to go via the copland pas, fist you will pas the welcome flat hut and go a bit further to douglas rock hut, there i would stay the night, from there it is a difficult walk up to the copland pas you need to be very good at walking on loose rock and if possible have a helmet. Once on the copland pass you will see the copland shelter, mount Cook and mount Cook village. Up there is already a truly amazing place to be. If you want to proceed further to copland shelter i would recommend only experienced climbers to further, it's steep climb down, there are constant rock slides, boulders will come down, you need rock climbing experience as well , the whole year around you will need , iceaxe , rope, and helmet. Never go alone ! If you are going alone make sure you let somebody know where you are going, let doc know as well, you need to have a locator beacon as well (even as you go with two) you can hire them from the nearest doc visitor center .
