Excellent freedom camping spot. We stayed a couple of nights. Gorgeous views of the lakes and mountains. Very relaxing. Only issue is Lake Camp has permitted motorised boat activities, so it can be noisy and busy on the lake with water skiing and jet skis etc. This is mainly between 9am and 9pm. However we still enjoyed despite that. Swimming in the lake is cold due to altitude (600m elevation) but the water is clear and refreshing. There are clean long drop toilets with hand sanitiser open all night. There are walks you can do all around Lake Camp and around Lake Clearwater down the road. The camping at Lake Camp is much nicer than the campsite at Lake Clearwater (seems to be many permanent caravans at Clearwater and they charge $10 per vehicle per night). There are plenty of flat and sheltered spots available at Lake Camp. It is located 10km down the unsealed gravel road. The road is corrugated in places but overall not a bad unsealed road. The road is sealed up to the historic buildings at the beginning of the conversation park boundary. From there all roads are unsealed. Really enjoyed our time in ashburton lakes, would recommend it if you have time and the weather is good. Make sure to take everything you need with you, including drinkable water, as there are no facilities or shops anywhere nearby.
