Beautiful vibes, staff are happy. Residents happy. Really well laid out. Professional friendly caregivers and equipment and two person cares per person. Might not be as modern but what a pleasant contrast to Summerset. Would highly recommend

This place is majorly out dated and depressing. Units are cold and get condensation in winter. Not suitable for people with walkers or wheelchairs. Was told to supply my own ramps at my cost. This place is a fire hazard with limited escape routes. Ever if you were able bodied you would not be able to open the window to escape. Limited activities available and residences are expected to manage them. The management couldn't care about the residences. It's purely a money making venture and it's a bad contract. Somerset is down the road. Please go there or somewhere else, save yourself the misery.

Atawhai (Oceania) is not in the business for allowing the elderly have a stress free last years of their lives - they are in it for the money only. Residents in villas have to organise their own outings and events and have to have their own committee to do so. The elderly are long past wanting to be on a committee and Oceania should have a paid person to do this job. There is not enough things to do and no amenties. People in villas are made to feel as they are being watched and assessing next steps of residents. eg shifting onto resthome etc. Pretending to be concerned. Needs a clean out of management that are compassionate and made for the job. No atmosphere. There is limited paths for pedestrians, wheelchairs and walkers, as they mainly have to share this space with cars. Villas are made to look nice, but think carefully and think ahead, things change and if there are no ramps, air conditioning, wide doorways, dish draw etc it is up to you to pay for it. As there are no ramps at any doors and you will have to provide your own. Even though these items are the norm these days in most retirement villages. Not here, you want it, you pay for it. The next residents benefit and they pay more for it. So why would you want to add value to it if you or (family) don't benefit financially in the end. It should be up to Oceania to make them as practical and comfortable for residents to live in, for the changing times ahead of these residents. At the time of inspection, make sure you have in writing what they are going to add or improve on, because later they renege on following through with improvements or deny that they agreed on saying they were going to do it at all . It shows you that Oceania does not care about their residents as they would monitor these reviews and iron out some of their problems. I also rang head office in Auckland over a year ago about one of these issues and I am still waiting to hear back. I rest my case!!
