We were travelling from Napier to Wellington for our flight home and had no wish to rush down the highway, when we could take a leisurely trip down a byway and see more of this beautiful country. We had no accommodation booked but had heard there was a hostel somewhere on the way to Castle Rock. We got directions via road signs from Pongaroa township, arriving close to dusk, no-one at the hostel, but a note stating find an unoccupied room and move in. We did, a very comfy double room, which turned out to be very cosy overnight. The bunkhouse had a lovely slow combustion room heater stove, which we lit, cooked our evening meal, read until time for bed, caught up with the owner in the morning, pad up [very reasonable price] moved on and arrived that evening at our Wellington hotel. CastleRock was magnificent too.
