Blue Range Hut

Interesting theme of hospital! Lucky to have it to my self. Hut has LED lights. Also ceiling is full of different maps. Forest has a different feeling than other hikes in Tararua, may be cause it was cloudy all the way to the hut.

Awesome place to go and stay. 3hrs in (steep gradient took it slow), 2hrs 5min out. Just enough space to pitch a couple of small tents if necessary. But the ground is not flat. You'd be sleeping on a slight angle. We were luck enough to have the hut to ourselves. Very comfortable. Tank water outside with a sink, the plug has been chewed on so you can't fill the sink. The ceiling is covered in old maps from the surrounding areas. Only one frypan and one fork in the kitchen so bring your own cooking supplies. Toilet is a longdrop. Fantastic veiw.

Took us 3 hours to get up to the hut from Kiriwhakapapa campsite, we stopped for a decent 20 minute lunchbreak. We have medium fitness. The track starts off in the beautiful redwoods and then you branch off the loop track for a 10 min flat hike before a gentle uphill and then the steep climbing begins and doesnt really stop until you get to the turn off to Blue Range Hut, it is then 10 mins down from the sign. The climb down is pretty brutal and took us exactly 2 hours with little stopping. We saw tui, piwakawaka, kereru, tomtits, grey warblers and a shining cuckoo.
