        The route to Powell Hut is a challenging day hike starting at the camsite at the end of Mount Holdsworth Road just 20 mins drive from Masterton. There is over 1000m of vertical ascent. The first part of the route to Rocky Lookout gives you a taste of things to come. Then an easy stretch up to Mountain House. After that the fun begins. A series of seemingly never ending series of staircases strech out in front of you. The trail is well sheltered until just before Powell Hut where you get above the tree line. Exhausted, but the views make every step worthwhile. Did not push on to Mount Holdsworth summit that day due to deteriorating weather.
