Please check the weather before you go. Incredible views on the top. A hiking stick would be recommended it gets chilly and windy at the top. Well-built tracks on the plains and stairs where possible. Best time for a hike is from December till the end of May. Around 600 to 700 people per day so gets very busy during this time.

Went on an 'out and back' walk up to soda springs on the Tongariro track from the Mangatepopo car park. It was the middle of winter, therefore car park and track were void of visitors which added to the experience.Would like to spend a whole day and hit the craters someday (weather permitting) preferably off-peak to avoid the crowds, so a clear day in late autumn would be ideal. Loved the frozen waterfall
