I wanted to love this place because it was closer than my go-to campground but it is very small with limited sites and they are not under tree cover as I thought they would be. Toilet is a long drop which was fine. The road nearby can be busy and you can hear cars on it. We ended up in a site next to a group of boys who were riding their atvs around all day, which was less than relaxing. There are heaps of hunters around here. Stars are beautiful though and the Rimu walk is nearby, so that is fun. Campfires are allowed which is the main reason we went there. The river isnt easy to get to and I wouldnt swim in it. There was heaps of rubbish around our campsite and old discarded metal scraps. Its a shame people havent taken care of it.

The road quickly turns from paved to gravel and then gravel to dirt. The dirt road is full of MASSIVE potholes, which were especially bad when we went after a week of heavy rainfall. The potholes were wide and frequent, so driving this part at a crawl while everyone held on took about 15 minutes. The road was quite literally like Swiss cheese. Wouldnt recommend taking a low-clearance vehicle out. After rain the lower sites were very soggy but the upper sides were tolerable for tents with ground tarps. Super peaceful campsite, and we got lucky with a clear sky so we saw incredible stars like nothing wed ever seen before on our travels, bright enough for even a cell phone camera to capture. The stars were well-worth the road and the damp. No cell service after leaving the paved road.

Lots of scary wasps be swell if DOC could remove or set traps to eradicate the wasp population

Standard nice DOC campsite. Watch for potholes when coming up to the campsite as there are many, some quite large.
