lovely array of antiques and a great shop full of great antiques. but are badly kept and maintained, lots of dirt and the antiques are stored in such a way, they will eventually be damaged. He has hardly any price tags ( a major red flag I must say) and there's plenty of trip hazards. That said, the owner's attitude is not the best, he's hardly welcoming and only talks to you if you buy something, No hello or Good morning and that smile is more fake than his prices. I've been to this store a few times, the first time to check the price of a old 1960 polaroid instant land camera. Now I'm a private collector and know what price is right for certain antiques, yes store owners have to make a profit, but not to cheat your customers. The average value of such a camera is around 15 to 25 dollars, so one would assume the price would be around 35 to 40 dollars, sounds fair right? yes it is, i asked him the price and he came out with a price of 50 dollars, so i said i'd come back another day. Few days later i come back, for the camera, ready with 50 dollars. He asks "what did i offer you previously?" I say 50, before i finish breathing he spurts out "75 no less" now i ain't no idiot, and I have been known to have a brilliant memory, and remember i know it's value. I repeated that you said 50, but he didn't budge, so I left the store. Now yes he's in his right to change the price, and i could easily afford 75 dollars for the camera, no hassle, but i will not buy from a rude, lying and distasteful store owner. He knew perfectly well what he offered previously, and suggesting I was lying to get a Bargain is just outright crook. But I suppose i should, as a collector seen the red flags when i first entered the store days earlier, As previously i had purchased a anther camera and a lot of 10 envelopes with stamps, the camera was 45 bucks, The camera itself was in great condition, as was the case (at least i though) i came home and proceeded to open the camera case, suppose what happened? the flap fell right off, what i had not known, because the case was close, the flag was badly damaged, which didn't surprise me considering the way the antiques where stored ( i later found out the camera was worth 30 to 35 dollars) the stamps where great, no problem there, only the price, 30 dollars is absurd, I only paid simply because i needed them to complete my New Zealand collection, i even told him they were worth no more than 20 dollars. But of course he wanted his money. I will most definitely never come back to his store, I'll keep to my favourite antique and collectable store in New Plymouth, The nice Fellow who owns the store knows me well, has manners and offers me reasonable, understandable and acceptable prices, heck occasionally he'll give me stamps or postcards for free! I do not recommend this store to anyone visiting Kaitaia, It's a clear and obvious tourist trap and scam. I've known many collectors and dealers in my lifetime, and he's perhaps the worst. Remember folks, Manners will always be important in life. It's how you win friends and influence people.
