Avis Car Rental Whangarei Airport

We were stranded after a rental from another company broke down. We called around and were told all cars in the area were booked. We were traveling from America and were far from our destination in New Zealand. Tony Friend, the agent at the Whangarei airport, went above and beyond locating a car for us. He was so helpful and personable. We are so grateful to him for his incredible service. Thank you Tony and Avis!

They do what they like and surprise with unjustified credit card charges

Charged $1000 more than the quote. A MONTH LATER we notice a $300 charge on our credit card, we contact Avis and they say it's for "cleaning" The vehicle was SPOTLESS the way we received it let alone to charge us a whole month later for cleaning. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY. Avoid at all costs as you will end up being charged far more than your original quote and then get surprise charges a month later!! Worst fraudulent company ever. We had the vehicle for 1 day, driving airport to airport. What should have been a simple experience was horrific.

The booking and pickup were great - the staff member I dealt with was excellent and helpful. The car was nearly brand new and worked perfectly. The problem I had was that I had a discount code I couldn't see how to add. So I contacted Avis afterwards to check whether the code could be added. The result: I was double charged for the booking, one charge (as expected) when I picked up the car, and another different (higher) charge 2 days after returning the car. It took a few days to get a refund on one of the charges and then I discovered they had refunded the lower charge, and kept the higher one! Unfortunately this has left a poor impression - a company that will charge you more than you agreed to pay when picking up the car.
