Yesterday NMM came to do the job, the same afternoon i got a invoice for 7 hours labour and about $40 for materials, what a shock, I checked with my worker and he claims that Bill and his welder wen no longer that 2 hours onsite. When i queried the hours on the invoice with Bill, he said that they had to off load 3 jerry cans, 1 dingy motor and 2 gas bottles and my worker had to open 2 floor boards to expose the hull from inside, this work was done by my worker, well they may have helped by passing a few things down. Bill is adamant that his invoice of 7hours at $85 per hour is justified to make the boat safe to weld and to weld 8 studs and 150mm seam, the joke is they welded less than 1m from a half full diesel tank ??
When Bill came to look at the job he gave no instructions on what needed to be removed for him to be able to do the work required, this comes down to poor communication, I would have been happy to pay for 2 hours of labour as witnessed by my worker for 2 staff a total of 4 man hours, however Bills attitude was "it is what it is" and the 7 hour charge stands.
On closer inspection of the workmanship it is an average job, not what would be expected from a $85 per hour rate. I will pay the invoice as soon as i can, however it will take a bit longer as i was expecting a charge for 1, maybe 2 hours of work and not the ridiculous 7hours. by the way Bill claims that he had to be the spotter for the job because of his insurance, if that was the case, he could have told me that upfront.
bottom line, poor communication and a blatant rip off
