Found this hidden gem of authentic Japanese food tucked in a 2nd floor. They are bunch of friendly people, such a Japanese hospitality.

Simply, I love the place. The food is consistently great, (I'm very partial to the tempura prawns.), the staff are lovely and always make us feel welcome and valued. A night there is always enjoyable and I very much recommend a visit.

Magnificent discovery! The door doesn't look like much. But what we found there, damn it! A cosy atmosphere, a few paper lamps. The kitchen is integrated into the room, we can see everything, nothing to hide. Very few tables (5 or 6), so little risk of it getting really noisy. But above all... We feel good here, like a cocoon! A little quiet Japanese music. We feel like we've been invited here. The staff is helpful, takes the time to answer our questions, advises us with a sincere smile, and even offers us half a glass of plum wine... because we were hesitating and finally we had chosen something else, but you-know-it-would-have-been-so-sad-if-we-left-without-knowing-plum-wine (she asked us if we had already tried it)! And indeed, it was excellent. We tasted it elsewhere later... way better here. The dishes ... the products are so fresh we would have believed them if they had told us that the fish had been caught by them in the early morning. A subtle cuisine, prepared with care, the tastes mix well. The quantities are just at our convenience. At the end of the meal, as always, the waitress who followed us throughout the meal asks us if everything went well, and inquires about our trip. How long are we here, where are we going... we couldn't help but share in this authentically Japanese restaurant that after New Zealand, we're heading to Japan, and what's more at Kumano Kodo, on thousand-year-old pilgrimage trails! The waitress can't believe it. "Why go get lost there?" "Well precisely... that's kind of the idea. Getting lost, far from big cities and close to nature and temples." "And you are going to sleep in a temple?" "Yes, yes, in shukubo (ed.; accommodation in Japanese temple hotels)." "Where ?" "To Koyasan." "Koyasan? Yabaaiii! (Yabai: kind of Japanese "OMG")" And here we go. An exchange full of mutual respect and complicity ensues. As the kitchen is in the room, we hear all the staff talking in Japanese "Koyasan? Yabaaaaiiii". And smile at us. And us to practice our few words of Japanese. And the waitress to teach us "Oishi" (to say that the food was excellent). After a profusion of "Sayonara" (goodbye), we leave amazed, truly teleported to Japan for an evening, and the heart warmed by these warm exchanges.

Exceptional meal + great service and nice balcony dining on 2nd floor. Tempura Prawn salad and Tofu salads were both amazing, as was the sushi. Vegetarian options: A few nice options - tofu salad especially, and nice edamame
