It's a bit of a drive past Glenorchy, on a compacted dirt/gravel road. Went in March, 2023. It rained both days. The road is well-maintained and easy to navigate, even in rain. There are 9 or 10 fords to cross. I was in a Toyota and didn't have any difficulty crossing. I kept an eye on the weather and rainfall, mindful of the rising water levels in the fords. Be aware of them and plan ahead. Bring extra food and water, and a blanket or two, with you just in case you get stuck on one side and have to wait for the water to recede. In my case, the water levels on day 2 were noticeably higher than day 1, but still traversable, even in the Toyota. The drive is beautiful the entire way. You'll pass a couple LOTR filming location on the way. Once you reach the car park and trail head, it gets even better. It is quiet, peaceful and beautiful. The first day there were no other cars at all. The second day there were two. The trail passes through forested areas with waterfalls coming down the rocks beside you and wide-open Meadows, all surrounded by the Dart River and towering mountains. It is an awesome and somewhat humbling experience to get to stand there and listen to nothing but the wind, rain, birds and rush of the river, all while watching the clouds come across the forest at tree-top height in places. Absolutely worth seeing. Definitely bring insect repellent as there are also plenty of sand flies.
