I agree with most comments the trail is quite boring but the view is more than worth it. I went with sunset and had an amazing time. Don't forget your torches tho! It's a long way back. We spend 6 hours in total on the mountain but at least 1 hour was enjoying the sunset.

Hard hike but worth to do. Among the best landscapes I have ever seen in Asia and Europe. Breathtaking. Scenery, sunlight will change, as you climb, and will bring you necessary energy for this 1300 m height hike. Everyone has advised to stay at Wnaka and climb this peak if you had to make a choice between Milford and Wnaka. We started early morning around 9.00 am. There were fogs or clouds in the morning. They disappeared with the sun rise. We had a cloud free hike on the way back with nice sun light in the afternoon. Need to bring water. Fees: Two NZD are recommended.

Started our walk at 4. Starting early during the dark helped mentally with getting up the mountain. It took us (beginner hikers) about 5-6 hours return walking at an average pace with many breaks. The feeling you get at the top is amazing and the sunrise is amazing even if youre still walking up. The challenge is worth it and would do it all over again. Recommend walking sticks especially on the way down to give more support. Note: toilet is only at the viewing spot not anywhere else along the track.
