Stunning views from the top...hike down from the sand dunes to have a closer look at the seals and sea lions

One of the better beaches Ive visited, almost the Gold Coast of nz. Super soft and fine sand, gets coarser nearer the water, seems like a small beach but its big enough not to feel the crowds. I visited at the height of summer, the sand on the beach was warm, the wind is gentle and comfortable, there are absolutely no sandflies unlike what the name says, and I had the loveliest time. Dogs are not allowed here because the beach is a resting place for sea lions and nesting area for yellow eyed penguins. I saw at least 8 sea lions when I was there. Would have walked into three of them if one of them didnt raise a flipper when I was five metres away nice warning. Its a steep descent to the beach - which also means a steep ascent back to the carpark - and can be challenging due to the super soft sand (its like walking up scree, u take two steps and slide down one). Be prepared to have a workout coming back up. Totally worth the effort though.
