The van itself from first glance was not in the best condition, but we didn't notice anything egregious. The cigarette lighter/phone charge port was falling out of the socket. There were splattered stains on the ceiling and sleeping mats.Fuel was a little less than 1/4 tank. That kind of thing. We took photos to cover our bases and we were off.
Here is where the real issues occurred. While driving through a pass coming back from Aoraki/Mt. Cook our tires blew out. The front passenger tire was completely blown and the rear passenger tire was in the midst of deflating. We were lucky nothing bad happened and we were able to pull over on the side of the road safely and quickly. We had one bar of service (by walking around searching for it on the side of the road) and were 30 miles minimum from the closest towns. We called multiple different numbers on our bookings for roadside assistance (their booking states we get roadside assistance) and each one directed me to another number saying I was calling the wrong number. I finally got ahold of someone named James (from Australia). James was the best part of this whole affair. He was very helpful and was helping me contact tow companies that might be able to come get us as we had spotty service. So, thank you James, you really saved us there.
Once the tow truck driver arrived (was also very kind and helpful), we found the tires were in horrible condition. The ones that blew out/went flat were 12 and 6 years old (it's recommended and law in some cases that tires are replaced after 5 years). The two tires still intact were also in poor condition with minimal tread left on them. Our tow truck driver drove back a few miles and verified that there was nothing in the road that we might have hit.
We had to pay for a lengthy tow to the next town, pay for a hotel for the night, and pay for the two tires. Dealing with the company afterward to sort the bill was frustrating. The only thing they refunded was the cost of the tires. Reading the fine print on their contract states that tow service is not covered (so I am not sure why they state in the standard font portion that they provide roadside assistance as they do not cover the cost of the tow and the numbers listed for roadside assistance kept telling me to call other numbers for help). Their fine print does state that if we were unable to use the van for a night we would be able to receive compensation for the time we were unable to use it. When I pointed that out, they stopped responding and I have not received a refund for the night we were unable to use the van.
