Observation Rock Lodge Stewart Island

We loved our stay at observation rock lodge. We were looking to experience total comfort, privacy and a little luxury during our 4-night stay on Stuart Island. Observation Rock Lodge is all that and so much more... Our suite was a decent size, spotless clean with a modern well equipped ensuite, a private balcony, a private twin spa bath on the balcony and an iconic panoramic Stewart Island view. Annett is the perfect host, looking after our every need and was patient and super friendly... she is also a talented Chef. Breakfast is included and what a breakfast! One of the best I have experienced at any BnB... but if you are staying here do yourself a favor and stay in for dinner at least once! For me it was one of the highlights of the entire trip. Observation Rock costs more than most other places on the island.... but it is worth every cent.

We stayed 4 days at Observation Rock Lodge. The place is beautiful, cozy, the view and garden are amazing however, I am sad to report that quite a few items were missing in our suitcase and things: - Brand new containers of complements (vit C, vit E, iron) have been emptied, some were on the table but others were in our bag and suitcase ! - 3 tubes of cream, hair primer and lubricant were also 3/4 emptied. - 3 boxes of crackers, an avocado, = 1 pair of white Indian kurta pants, a blue sweat shirt with a blue hood. I am detailing these as a warning for future guests ! The room we were in (room 1) could not be locked. This unpleasant incident has left us with a bitter taste, after such a wonderful stay on Stewart island. We mentioned the problem to Annett, she seemed surprised. We kindly invited her to take all necessary measures to solve this problem before future guests arrive. This problem seems to be recent as we saw another comment from this month on TripAdvisor mentioning the same problem. Apart from this, we had a wonderful time in Stewart Island, it is such a special place, the atmosphere there was so charming,all the people we met extremely kind, nature beautiful and the pub absolutely great! Annett was helpful in recommending us activities to do, and places to see. We loved kayaking, walking, sightseeing, boating to Ulva.

We recommend that you do not stay at Observation Rock Lodge. We stayed there on March 22-25, 2023. The proprietress, Annette, was very inhospitable. She did not make us feel welcome and got after us about wearing slippers in the lodge, where we could hang our clothes in our rooms and leaving lights on (even though some of us had to travel to the bathrooms in the night in the complete dark). In addition, the people who stayed there lost clothing. I personally lost a down vest, a nice sweater, two pairs of shorts and all my make-up. My husband lost a shirt and his charging brick. One friend lost three jackets and 2 pairs of pants. Another friend lost 2 pairs of pants. Another friend lost 2 shirts. For these reasons, we do not recommend Observation Rock Lodge as a place to stay on Stewart Island.
