        Most people will be visiting Stewart Is without access to a vehicle. If you are looking for things to do, then I recommend the walk to the Ackers Cottage. Great scenery along the way and the cottage is very picturesque with a great story of a very interesting man behind the building of it. He was a well to do New Yorker who decided to chance his arm at becoming a harpooner on a whaling ship and then married a Maori wife, bought 600 acres off the local tribe and settled into boat building and farming. We came across the Stewart Is sheep around the cottage while we were there.
