It's definitely worth a detour off the main highway to Te Anau. There are plenty of accommodation options as well as free camping on the tracks. From short 30-minute walking trails to experienced hiking trecks. Sandfly deterant is a necessity. The scenic views, wildlife, fishing, hunting, and birdlife are exceptional. The history is very educational for all ages. There are activities all around. Kyack, boating, fishing, hunting, or just relaxing. No tourist overcrowding, which was a nice blessing. Be aware there are no shops, services, or petrol stations within close proximity, so go well prepared. Weather is forever changing, so always have wet weather gear and warm dry clothes available. If hiking, you must take an emergency, beacon. Enjoy this gem of a place.
