Basic and old. The 4 bunks are all usable and have decent mattresses, and the small bench is fine for cooking etc. Water tank is very small so may often be empty (very low when visited). The floor is caked in mud, as you'd expect from the hut location, so more than 4 visitors might be an issue. The door doesn't really close, piece of string looped over nail to close, and has gaps all round. Add this to the many, many holes and gaps in the walls and you'd probably be warmer in a tent, but that option would require usable tent space, which there is not. For the most part the walls will keep the wind out though, and the roof is solid - it rained all night during our visit and there it seemed completely watertight! So dry and reasonably warm, with beds - all you need really!

My great, great uncle built this over 100 years ago. Great views, great service. Late check-out time. I will be back.

The hut itself is very basic. We walked their to see it as my husband had memories of the hut as a child camping there with the boy scouts over 50yrs ago. Drive as far as you can to the end of caskade rd, its a rough old logging rd. Our 2wd drive truck managed the rd. Once you get to the logs across the road, park up and walk over the logs about 700metres,there is a white TeAroa trail post on the right follow the orange triangles for appox 40mins to arrive at the hut. Its a gradual climb but not bad. There is a lot of history in this area with logging and gold mining.

Very basic in comparison with other backcountry huts I've stayed at. Nice location. 4 beds. The water tank was empty in Jan 2022, so carry in what you need. A few rats. Be prepared for mud when coming from either direction.
