Hard to know how to review Falcon Ridge Estate; we discovered that it is officially not open for tastings any more. However, after a phonecall, Alan the ever convivial owner, agreed to providing a tasting, and proudly talked us through his wines and their making. The Pinot was my particular favorite; full, deep, exultantly Pinot Noir. The Syrah was svelte, character-full, with a seam of pepper exciting the palate; and the Savignon Blanc more rounded and not as bracing as some of its Marlborough cousins but still defined and all the more approachable for it. We were startled to learn that the vines have been removed, for now at least, and 2017 wines will be the last. Happily though Alan informed us he has supplies to last for another year or two and the wines can be purchased from the website or by phone. We, slightly wistfully, made certain to take away a couple of cases of these rare delights.

Based on the wines we tasted we would have given at least 3 stars; however the wine tasting experience was less than enjoyable. The cellar door manager was arrogant and pretentious. We have lived in the Central Otago region of NZ with incredible Pinot Noir and we have also lived in Napa/Sonoma; therefore we are somewhat experienced with delicious wines. Unfortunately when the manager questioned our palate we felt as though she was being pompous. The location is great being right off the Taste Trail; however we will not likely return or seek out their wines in this area secondary to feeling unwelcome and inferior.

Last Vinyard heading south, do not miss it! Wonderful wines, Pinot, Sav and Shiraz only but award winning and worth popping in.

We noticed Falcon Ridge as we were riding by on our way to Wakefield and decided it was worth a quick visit. Very glad we did. The wine was good and the owners were friendly and happy to chat. Being not so well known, it was one of the quieter cellar doors in the area. A small donation is requested for tastings.
