Sunday Nov 4 2018 While attempting to traverse the ever unpredictable Karangahake Gorge - on a blustery day - I found my way blocked by a fallen tree. A number of handy types were attempting to clear the way, axes were being swung and one chap was using his 4x4 to drag limbs away. One assumes they were all local as Aucklanders don't keep axes in their cars... at least not for lumberjack duties. A detour via the ditch had been found but as I had the company's largest trailer loaded with port-a-loo's in tow - yes, that was me - this was not really an option. The petrol tanker behind me wasn't keen either. What to do? This predicament was soon solved with the arrival of the cavalry aka the Waihi Fire Brigade. Ten minutes of carpentry by the helmeted ones and we were underway again. Excellent work, very efficient, they're a credit to the service.
