Remutaka Rail Trail - Cross Creek

I started the hike from the carpark at Cross Creek, the first part of the hike was a footpath through the bush and woodland rather than the rail trail, however this joined the rail trail a 40 minute walk later at Cross Creek junction. There were a few people passing me on e-bikes and ordinary bike's. The rail trail was a gentle walk uphill and very easy going following what was the old rail track. It follows through a tunnel, swing bridge and a couple of other tunnels before reaching the top of the rail incline. This is a good place to stop off for lunch. The walk is well worth doing. I previously did this in reverse last year via e-bike from the Wellington side. Once you have completed I highly recommend that you visit the Fell engine Musium at Featherstone. This has all the history of the Rumutaka railway and has a fell engine used on the railway. The Musium is open at weekends and you get a guided tour. Costs $6.
