As a white person I was able to move through the airport without issue (though it took a long time). My partner on the other hand was pulled aside and interrogated for 2 hours by 10 different people. She's still learning English and had trouble with their questions, but they could not bother to get an interpreter and would not let her contact me for help. They kept demanding proof of onward flight and financial evidence, despite her visa clearly stating this is not required (as we already provided it during her visitor visa application, which took 5 months BTW). Also Qantas lost her luggage. An excellent welcome to the country.

All in all this is a great Airport to use and I enjoy my experiences there, with the exception of Aviation Security which always has enormously long ques. Although AVSEC claim they are short-staffed there are always staff standing around doing nothing and they use one lane when they could be operating two. I strongly suspect this is due to AVSEC being heavily unionised. They are letting the team down at Wellington Airport for what could otherwise be an exemplary experience.
