My wife and I stayed at the Paramata Lodge for two nights, delightfully hosted by Kathy and Neil. Located on the wild West Coast, near Hokitika we chose this quiet spot hoping for a respite from the more travelled areas of the South Island. The setting is remarkable and truly unique, with amazing hand-crafted wood carvings and art throughout the house and extensive grounds. We spent two afternoons exploring the beach, seeing no one. The home-prepared meals were some of the best we enjoyed in our three weeks on the island. Kathy gave us a naturalist tour of the old growth forest on their property, including some amazing examples of Kahikatea trees, loaded with ferns and other epiphytes. We enjoyed talking to Neil about his art sculptures and the history of the house and its conception and creation. What a great experience - we are very grateful to have landed here. Nearby activities: Greenstone/pounamu carving in Hokitika.

My wife and I were lucky to stay two nights at Paramata. Spending time with Kathy and Neil felt like time with family. We spent 14 days in NZ and this was the highlight. We learned much about the island and its history, flora, and fauna from our time there. The food was excellent; the room neat, comfortable, and spacious; and the location was a perfect secluded spot where we could truly relax and just enjoy the sounds of the water and views of the mountains. Would recommend without hesitation to anyone going near Ross, Hokitika, or Franz Josef.
