Amazing wines and setting let down by a lacklustre tasting experience. We booked in for a wine tasting experience and when greeted we were given the option of either a $25pp tasting or $45pp wine 'flight' tasting. We opted for the wine flight and selected 'The Spirit Journey' which was $90pp (75ml pours) so total $180 for my partner and I to taste 4 wines each. 'The Spirit Journey' blurb reads "This flight will take you on a journey through our iconic and timeless Bordeaux blends" so we were looking forward to the experience. After watching the video about the Herzogs and the vineyard, we sat outside on the verandah and were given the first of the 4 wines with a very brief description from the server who then went back to get the remaining 3 wines. Once she delivered the remaining 3 wines we didn't see her again until we had finished them all (for around 30 minutes we were left outside to drink through all our 'flights' on our self-propelled 'journey' tasting experience). About 10 minutes after we arrived another group turned up so perhaps the server was busy with them at the counter, but for a $180 tasting I expected to at least be told something about each wine as we tasted them (something that every other tasting I have done at other wineries have done, which are only around $10pp.) Instead, we were essentially given 4 tasters and left to drink through them all outside by ourselves. Luckily the wine was superb, the gardens beautiful, but unfortunately the pleasant taste of the wine was followed by the bitter taste of an extremely poor 'flight' experience. We purchased 4 bottles of wine at the conclusion of our tasting (including a bottle that was part of the flight) but I'd rather have spent the $180 on another bottle or 2. What was meant to be the highlight of our trip to Blenheim turned into a sad disappointment. Here's hoping the memory of this poor experience does not taint my future enjoyment of the otherwise impeccable wine that Hans works so hard to produce.
