Putangirua Pinnacles

Currently closed due to large landslip - no signs in car park, only an alert on DOC website. Unless you like getting your feet wet. The river was too high today. We tried to approach using the ridgeline loop track from the road end, but it is awful and we turned around halfway, don't bother.

Worth noting that as it stood on 17 April 2023 all tracks to the Pinnacles are currently closed due to land slips and falling rock. Against the advice of the DOC sign that says "danger do not proceed", we started the track up the mountain but it was so wet and slippy that we turned back after 15 mins, not sure what the rest of the track is like! Then we followed the stream track for about 20 minutes but it became pretty impassable. Parking, toilets and camping still available.

Even though it has been 4 years since I have been here, if/when I come back to NZ in my lifetime it will be to come here with better camera gear and skills to spend a few days/nights camping nearby on the beach while trying to capture all kinds of styles of photos. Rock formations are my first love of photography, and these are just amazing. Probably, also the best of the Lord of the Rings filming locations to visit as well.
