We camped here and had friends in the fully booked hut. The site is beautiful, exposure to cool wildlife, and decent facilities for a campsite. The ranger was excellent, and invited us to the hut for an info talk. As long as you come prepared this is a really pleasant spot to stay.

The spot indicated here on Google Maps for the campsite is wrong. The campsite is few minutes walk further the hut. As for the rest of nz campsite, you can camp only in the specific spot "designed" for putting the tent. Unfortunately there are no spots to make bonfires, and making any type of fire is strictly prohibited... like if you could burn the whole forest... The spot itself for camping is nice... next to the river, nice view of some mountains, but not astonishing. In early morning you can make some nice pictures of the surrounding areas. I can't say "recommend or not" as there is no other choices for camping, and you also need to book and pay heaps of money for just putting a tent one night...
